The search for the invisible women

What started with the search for the Dutch myth of the witte wieven, grew over time into a bigger collection of stories behind female ghosts, now also across the borders of the Netherlands. France, Norway, Italy and Belgium showed me the landscapes of their myths about ghostly women, often to be found in forests, castles, and abbeys. What is the story behind these women, who were they and what is there still to be found about them at the places they lived? But also; why are so many stories of female ghosts about religion, witchery, and oppression?

What words are used to describe them? How were they portrayed at that time and to what extend does that influence how we see them today? Each of these stories is about a different woman, all with a different story and a different environment, but every one of them had to fight for their visibility. As they are literally about to lose their appearance, fading in time, I see power in the ghost-like form history seems to have given them. Only by showing you these stories, and researching them, I hope to give them back their visibility, respect, and the magic they always had.

*) Some stories are still under construction, or altered over time. And more female ghost stories are coming.
