The Invisible Women
This is the search for the Witte Wieven: once upon a time, they were wise female herbalists, healers, goddesses, and spirits from the forest. This description still holds true in neighboring countries but shifted to the idea of ghosts, witches, or mist figures in the Netherlands. Using folktales as a guide, I visit the origins of this story to find the space between fact and myth. The memory of the landscapes, the importance of female voices in storytelling and their structural silencing throughout history are recurring themes in my search for these invisible women. To conserve and protect I document and collect, finding long lost magic hidden behind rationality. I make this work in the hope that they may be remembered for what they were, are and will be.
